Patriarchal Election Déjà Vu in Turkey.

Government Meddling in the Election is Inevitable, but Not Decisive

By Dr. Hratch Tchilingirian

Horizon, March 27, 2017

Canonisation of the Genocide Victims: What is the meaning of their sainthood?*

By Dr Hratch Tchilingirian

On the 75th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, in a joint Communiqué issued on April 29, 1989 for the occasion, Their Holiness Vazken I Catholicos of All Armenians and Karekin II Catholicos of Cilicia "propose[d] that the preparatory activities continue for the canonisation of [the Genocide] victims." Indeed, the idea of religious commemoration of the Genocide victims goes back to the early years of the First Republic of Armenia (1918-1920), when the Armenian Government at the time formally applied to Catholicos Gevorg V to include the martyrs in the liturgical calendar of the

Armenian Turkish Rapprochement: What Now?

Hratch Tchilingirian

Turkey and Armenia signed two protocols on 10th October 2009 in Zurich which was the culmination of months of talks. Under the agreement, Turkey and Armenia will establish diplomatic relations and re-open their border. The protocols, which need to be approved by the Parliament of each country, also calls for a panel to investigate the "historical dimension" of the two countries relations - an unmentioned reference to the issue of the genocide of Armenians during World War I.

Why Armenians Celebrate Christmas on January 6th

By Hratch Tchilingirian

"Armenian Christmas," as it is popularly called, is a culmination of celebrations of events related to Christ's Incarnation. Theophany or Epiphany (or Astvadz-a-haytnootyoon in Armenian) means "revelation of God," which is the central theme of the Christmas Season in the Armenian Church. During the "Armenian Christmas" season, the major events that are celebrated are the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem and His Baptism in the River Jordan. The day of this major feast in the Armenian Church is January 6th. A ceremony called “Blessing of Water” is conducted in the Armenian Church to commemorate Christ’s Baptism.

Revisiting Political Ideology and Strategy

Hratch Tchilingirian

The immediate reaction of a casual observer of Armenian life in the Diaspora to the 120th anniversary of the first Armenian political party is, arguably, of irrelevance. While the majority of diasporans are familiar with the "three traditional political parties", they are hardly familiar with the program and history of these national institutions that have preserved Armenian political and cultural life in dispersion for over one hundred years.
